Tracking the greatest threat in the Guyana Shield

In 2017, WWF-Germany, working with WWF-France in French Guiana supported efforts to update maps of areas impacted by alluvial gold mining. The process involved creating annual lastest-pixel mosaics from Landsat using Google Earth Engine, and visually interpreting impacted areas in expert-led group sessions or map-a-thons, which brought together local users and interested parties to take part. The method was replicated in Suriname and Guyana to produce a consistent mapping framework for the entire Guiana shield. Additional efforts include integrating field data and informant information from apps, and engaging local communities in reporting and data collection. Results were also published in a report by ONFI
